What to do in The Lake District this Winter

The Lake District in winter is a serene, often snow-dusted paradise, offering a peaceful escape with fewer crowds. It’s a wonderful time for outdoor adventures, cozy retreats, and enjoying the region’s tranquil beauty.

Here’s our guide to our favourite things to do in the Lake District in winter:

Take a Hike!

Snow covered mountains, frozen lakes and crisp chilly air is the perfect reason to be drawn outside this winter. Plumes of smoke dance into the sky from the cosy little cottages scattered across the landscape.

Loughrigg Fell

A great ramble for the whole family. Alter the route depending on your ability and explore Rydal Cave on route. Don’t forget to finish your stroll at the famous Badger Bar, for local ale, warming hot chocolates and traditional pub food.

Coniston Old Man

For the more adventurous hiker, this mountain is renowned for its incredible views. In heavy snow, only experiences winter hikers should tackle this beauty, but with a heavy frost and clear blue skies, it’s worth wrapping up and tackling the summit for a 360 view of the Lake District in all its glory. Research this one well before setting off, weather changes quickly up high and terrain can be treacherous in bad conditions.

Tarn Hows

The perfect family stroll, buggy, and wheelchair friendly. The National Trust take great care of this beautiful little patch of land, once belonging to Beatrice Potter. Explore the tarn and step off path to enjoy a flask of tea on one of the many benches.  An absolute spectacle in winter with crisp leaves and frozen puddles.

Pick a pub

Pubs are synonymous with the Lake District experience. Whether you’re in search for the perfect pint or a Sunday roast, you’ll be able to find your dream pub nestled within the hills and streams.

The Drunken Duck

A local icon, and renowned for using local, top-quality ingredients sourced by excellent chefs.

Sunday dinner includes venison wellington and all the trimmings.

The Badger Bar

Surrounded by fells and just a stone throw from Rydal Water, The Badger Bar serves a selection of local ales, hearty meals and Sunday roasts. Cosy up by the fire, bring the dogs inside and while away an afternoon with friends and family.

The Golden Rule

In the centre of Ambleside, one of the oldest pubs in the area, take a trip back in time and nest down into a cosy corner with a tasty pint and a pickled egg.  You’ll definitely be taking some stories home with you!

Stargazing

The Lake District is a designated Dark Sky Reserve, and winter offers clear, crisp nights ideal for stargazing. Whinlatter Forest and Haweswater are excellent spots to observe the stars and catch a glimpse of the Milky Way.
