Spring Equinox in the Lake District

In England this year, the spring equinox will occur on Wednesday, March 20th

This is the time when the sun crosses the celestial equator, and day and night are approximately equal in length. The exact date and time of the spring equinox can vary slightly from year to year and this special day marks the astronomical beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Spring in the Lake District is a beautiful and vibrant time of the year. The National Park is transformed during this period into the incredibly green and lush landscape the area is best known for. The woodlands and fellsides bursts into colour with a variety of wildflowers and blossoming trees. Bluebells, daffodils, primroses, and cherry blossoms are some of the highlights during this season.

The recent, late winter rainfall has swamped the rivers and hillsides, brimming the lakes full of fresh, pure water. It is a great time to partake in water sports such as kayaking, and anyone interested in cold dipping can experience a truly chilly plunge in mountain pools.

So, how will you celebrate this special day?

We recommend strapping on your boots and heading for the hills. You may still need a few more layers than desired, but the sun on your face is bound to give you a burst of Spring cheer.

Pack up a picnic in your rucksack and enjoy some delicious sandwiches on a bench with a view and listen to the birds chirping in the bushes and swooping overhead. Watch the lambs frolicking, newly born, excited to be alive and enjoying the fresh grass.

As the sun starts to lower itself and the temperature drops, duck into one of Cumbria’s traditional ancient pubs and enjoy a pint of creamy local ale by the log fire. Maybe a bowl of chips to accompany?

The best thing about this time of year, is the balance between seasons is so palpable that you can enjoy the sun kissed afternoons, and still look forward to a cosy evening in. It really is the best of both worlds and a time to be treasured.
