Where to eat in Grasmere

We often get asked the best places to eat out around the Lake District, and with so many excellent places to choose from – it’s hard to pin down the very best. To make this a little easier, we are working on curating a list of our top recommendations for restaurants, cafes, delis, pubs, and everything in between. This way we can help you find the perfect dining experience for every occasion!

Restaurants:

  • The Forest Side

A Michelin Star awarded restaurant boasting some of the best food in the region. Growing much if their own produce on site or sourcing as locally as possible, for those very special occasions, this is the place. An all-vegetarian menu is also on offer for both lunch and dinner.

  • Jumble Room

Quirky, ever-changing, delicious, and fresh, Jumble Room offers an un-matched cheerful atmosphere. Dishes include Malaysian-style spiced crab, steamed pork and lemongrass dim-sum and truffled hake. Don’t forget the parmesan frites!

Pubs/Bars

  • Travellers Rest

An iconic pub and the first ray of ale-coloured sunshine at the base of Dunmail Raise, Travellers Rest is a family friendly, traditional pub serving up local, fresh food. Expect Venison burgers, fish and chips and classic Ploughman’s.

  • The Swan

The perfect place to stop for a bowl of chips and a pint of something refreshing. Located just out of the village centre, on the way up or down from Alcock Tarn and Herons Pike. Reward yourself after a gruelling hike – you’ve earnt it.

  • The Badger Bar

Although, not centrally located in Ambleside, this exceptional pub is well worth a visit. Perched on the edge of Rydal Water, enjoy the unmatched atmosphere or this cosy, Lakeland hideaway with dark wood beams, and a slate backed beer-garden. Serving up Sunday roasts and classic favourites, alongside a delicious selection of local ales. Sit back, relax and watch the live-stream badger set cameras each evening!

Cafes/Delis

  • Freda & Ray

If you like your flat white with a heart on top and your avocado on sourdough – this is your place. Enjoy fresh scones, brunches and delicious coffee right in the heart of Grasmere.  On a Friday and Saturday evening, treat yourselves to pizza and cocktails in a cosy, laid back environment.

  • Baldrys

A quintessentially English tearoom in the heart of the Lake District. Enjoy a wide selection of fine teas, freshly baked cakes and traditional lunches.

  • Mathildes

A taste of Scandinavia in Grasmere inspired by the incredible artist Heaton Cooper.  Indulge in Kottbullar (Swedish meatballs) Raraka Roky Oring (smoked trout) and a selection of delicious brunch options and Scandi treats.

  • Lucias

The ideal place to fill up on cinnamon buns and sausage rolls before hitting the fells. You may find yourself filling your backpack with irresistible treats. Order a coffee, enjoy the sunshine, and relax.
