Why We Love Chapel Stile

Chapel stile is the epitome of a Lake District village. Standing amongst iconic blue slate quarries, surrounded by picturesque mountains and stark fells, this community is soaked in Cumbria charm. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing weekend away with friends, basking in the lake district sun and enjoying the local wild swimming spots, or a walking week with the family, Chapel Stile is the perfect location.

We’ve compiled a few of our favourite things about this gorgeous village.

Herdwicks

Herdwicks are synonymous with the Lake District and Chapel Stile has them in droves. They’re not just hefted to the hillsides, you’ll find them wondering around the local’s gardens, trotting down the side of the roads, and jumping over the dry-stone walls.

Historically, sheep farming has been the backbone of the local community and remains a vital part of the culture today. These gorgeous animals provide meat and wool as well as grazing the hillsides and providing a livelihood for local farming communities. You can find Herdwick inspired souvenirs all over Cumbria and purchase their products in the local shops.

Walkers’ paradise

If you’re looking for somewhere that can give you a wide range of walks, from short strolls with the dogs, to day expeditions with a picnic in tow, Chapel Stile is the place. Explore Pike o’ Blisco, Harrison Stickle, Pavey Ark, and the Langdale Pikes. You’ll also find iconic locations nearby such as Cathedral Cave and Hodge Close.

Pubs, glorious pubs!

You can’t beat a good Cumbrian pub. Supplying local ales and hearty meals, you’ll find the perfect place to recuperate after a day in the wild.

Wainwrights Inn is in the heart of the village, serving up traditional Lakeland dishes and Sunday roasts, it’s the perfect place to unwind after an action packed day out.

The Britannia Inn at Elterwater is a great spot to sample local beers and enjoy a delicious bowl of chips after a walk. If the weathers a bit chilly, warm up inside by the open fires with a brandy hot chocolate.

Lanty Slee’s at Sticklebarn is the newest local addition. Having taken over the well-known National Trust pub, the locals favourite now serves up Cumbrian produce as well as their own Lake District liquor. They also have a smaller spot located at Elterwater, perfect for a bite to eat or some cocktails with a view.
