Why we love Winster

Winster is a hidden gem in the Lake District. Nestled to the south of Lake Windermere and shadowing the Lyth Valley, Winster is a little-known area perfect for nature lovers, walkers and a those seeking a sense of isolation.

For walkers who enjoy a ramble, a forage or maybe a stroll finished with a good pub lunch, Winster is the place – abundant in footpaths and home of local favourite, The Brown Horse. Hailed ‘County Winners for the National Pub & Bar Awards 2023’, The Brown Horse is now officially Cumbria’s pub of the year. Once a Georgian coaching inn, the pub now serves up high quality, locally sourced food that changes with the seasons. Why not book a table for the whole family, or dine alfresco with the rolling hills for company?

Visit during early autumn and see the valley comes alive with damsons. Local to the region and iconic in the Lyth Valley area, damsons signify the changing season and the shortening of days. In early spring, the trees burst with blossoms and the valley is transformed into a dancing vision of pink petals.

An image of ‘pastoral bliss’, Arthur Ransome moved to the Winster Valley in 1925 and wrote the famous ‘Swallows and Amazons’. It’s hard not to feel inspired by the quiet and peaceful scenery that surrounds Winster. The perfect place for a retreat.

If visiting with the family, there are plenty of local activities to keep everyone entertained. Try out mountain biking in Grizedale Forest, clay pigeon shooting, alpaca walking, 4×4 driving or a game of golf at Windermere golf course. The quiet roads also make it an ideal location for cyclists, bring your own or rent locally.

If you’re ready to book your luxurious escape to the picturesque Winster Valley, look no further than Broom Hill. A stunning four-bedroom detached home, beautifully unique and complete with boutique charm, its very own swim spa and handy bike storage.
