The West Windermere Way

This month sees the opening of the West Windermere Way. A stunning new accessible path connecting Newby Bridge and Lakeside.

This new path is split into sections and provides perfect access for cyclists, horse riders, pushchairs, and families. One section of the route makes up route 51 of Miles without Stiles and is fully accessible for wheelchair users.

  • Beginning in Newby Bridge, the Swan Hotel provides the perfect pre-walk fuel stop. Very popular with locals and visitors, the Swan serves delicious meals such as braised beef pie, roast dinners, and irresistible burgers. Why not try a few local ales before heading out for your walk?
  • Head out along the lake shore and follow the trail as it skirts along water and woodland. In parts, the route follows the Haverthwaite railway line, where steam trains bellow as they bring passengers from Lakeside, where you can take a boat ride up the lake.
  • In summer months, there is a small ferry that goes over to Fell Foot Park, where you can enjoy a cream tea or an ice cream.
  • Walkers have the option to detour into Finsthwaite follow the path up towards High Dam for some unbeatable scenery or a wild swim.
  • Carrying on along the West Windermere Way will slowly take you towards Stott Park Bobbin Mill, a fascinating heritage site documenting the history of the local weaving industry.
  • Follow the trail as it heads to Lakeside YMCA, where the route finishes. The journey will take you through hamlets, woodland footpaths, and traditional Lakeland farmland.

If you’re interested in following this brand-new trail during your R&H holiday, head to the Lake District National Park Website for a full description and to download the route map.
