Retreats & Hideaways - Luxury Self Catering the Lake District

A Day Out, No Matter The Weather

Summer is well and truly under way here in the Lake District. As with every year, there’s a precarious balance between bluebird days, where the sun is high and the temperature peaks, and the days where the heavens open, the raindrops come down with force and the air is dense with the lovely smell of damp earth.

We strongly believe a little rain shouldn’t prevent you from making the most of your holiday. So, we’ve put together a few ideas of how to embrace the Lake District during those damper days.

Follow a trail.

The Lake District is iconic for its scenic mountain hikes, concurring wainwrights and climbing peaks. But, there is also plenty of low level, forested walks available for those days when you fancy something a little different. Pack a backpack, picnic, and enjoy the sounds of birds and the wind in the trees. Perfect for a day where the weather may be a little unpredictable.

We recommend the following:

  • Grizedale Forest, Hawkshead
  • Stagshaw Gardens, Ambleside
  • Whitbarrow Nature Reserve, Witherslack
  • High Dam, Finsthwaite
  • Hay Bridge Nature Reserve, Rusland
  • Great Wood, Keswick
  • Eves Wood, Silverdale
  • Roudsea Wood, Greenodd
  • Tarn Hows, Hawkshead

Go for a dip.

The great thing about the swimming, is it doesn’t matter if it’s raining. This is the perfect activity for the drizzly, humid days. Pop your swimsuit on under your waterproof and take to the lake. Its great way to embrace the Lake District weather, and an even better excuse for a hot chocolate or ice cream after!

Our favourites include:

  • Windemere Lake
  • Coniston Water
  • Loweswater
  • Derwentwater

Geek out.

We promise, it’s not as boring as it sounds. Cumbria has some fascinating history. From Roman Forts to Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, the Lake District has something to interest every visitor. And what better way to while away the hours, than learning about our beautiful National Park?

  • Hill Top, Hawkshead. Beatrix Potter’s farmhouse retreat.
  • Windermere Jetty Museum, Windermere.
  • Ruskin’s Museum, Coniston
  • Pencil Museum, Keswick
