The Best Picnic Spots to Visit with Children

  1. Wray Castle

Stroll along the shores of Windermere and settle on the shores for a family picnic. This is a great location for young children to burn off energy. Bring balance bikes and pushchairs and make the most of the wide footpaths skirting the water. If you don’t fancy packing your own food – Joeys café serves up delicious snacks, bakes, and coffee to take on your mini adventure.

  1. Rydal Cave

Located on the Rydal Water circuit, this cave provides a perfect stop-off for families seeking a picnic with a view. Explore the cave and jump over the stepping stones that lead deep into the watery depths. Don’t forget to add sandwiches to your backpack and a flask of something hot and tasty.

  1. Tarn Hows

In summer, The National Trust open an ice cream van and sit temptingly in the Tarn Hows carpark. Make sure to resist until the walks ended! The perfect picnic spot is just around the corner…

Nestle amongst the trees, keep your eyes peeled for ducks and rare breed cattle and enjoy the sound of wind rustling through the canopy. Children will love exploring this magical location, especially with the promise of a treat at the end!

  1. Fell Foot Park

A hot spot in summer for family fun, Fell Foot is a historical park on the edge of Windemere.

Whether you are renting a rowboat or paddleboards, bringing your own inflatables or just planning on jumping straight in – make sure to bring a tasty pack-up for re-fuelling.

  1. Castlerigg Stone Circle

A little further afield, but well worth the journey, this stone circle stands proud in a field overlooking Keswick. Take a journey back in time and marvel at the megalithic monument. Why not enjoy a flask of tea and a wedge of cake whilst you’re at it?
