Autumn is a spectacular time to visit The Lake District. As the seasons change, the landscape takes on a whole new sense of unmatched magic. The swathes of trees turn crisp and bright, the golden and red hues stretching across the fells and wrapping around the Lakes as the new season settles in.
Early in the morning, cloud inversions settle across the water as the temperatures change, creating the perfect reason to wake up early, and get up high to float above the clouds amongst the mountains.
If you’re lucky enough to be visiting Cumbria this autumn, we’ve put together a list of great activities to keep the whole family entertained and enjoying the freshest of air.
Hiking & Walking
Autumn is a great time to explore the Lake District on foot. The cooling temperatures make for a perfect time to work up a sweat and enjoy the cool breeze. Whether you’re looking for a low-level walk with the family or a mountain top exploration, you’re bound to find the perfect place in the Lakes. For family friendly strolls, National rust locations offer great accessibility at a variety of locations. For something a little more strenuous, be sure to purchase the local OS map and research your route beforehand. The Woodland Trust is also a great resource for finding woods and forests to discover.
Lake Cruises
Take a cruise across the water and view the mountains and forests by boat. With a vantage point like no other, you will be emersed in nature and create unbeatable memories. Windermere Lake Cruises, Derwentwater and Ullswater Steamers offer traditional cruises. Make sure to pack a flask of tea and a cosy jacket to make the most of your trip.
Autumn Picnics
Fill your backpack with irresistible treats from any of our fantastic delis and cafes, fill up a flask and head to a stunning spot. We like Tarn Hows and Rydal Cave for taking in the afternoon autumn sunshine enjoying a delicious sandwich.
Go Wildlife Watching
If wildlife watching is your passion, or you would like to immerse yourself in nature a little further, why not visit one of the Lake Districts wonderful nature reserves. Visit Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the RSPB for a list of local reserves. Our favourites include Leighton Moss, Silverdale, and Roudsea Wood, Haverthwaite.
