There is something about autumn in the Lake District that lends itself particularly well to good food.
The days are cooler, the fells take on those beautiful russet and gold tones, and suddenly a long lunch, a cosy pub or a special dinner feels even more appealing after a day spent outside.
We are incredibly lucky to have some exceptional places to eat across the Lakes, and autumn is one of our favourite times to enjoy them. Whether you are planning a weekend around food or simply looking for somewhere lovely to book during your stay, there are plenty of places worth seeking out.
In the south Lakes, Heft at Newton in Cartmel is always high on our list. Set in a beautiful old village inn, it combines seriously good food with a relaxed feel, and its focus on seasonal Cumbrian produce makes it especially suited to this time of year.
Further north, Grasmere is one of those places that feels made for autumn. A walk around the village or up onto the surrounding fells followed by dinner at The Forest Side makes for a pretty perfect day. The setting is beautiful, the food is rooted firmly in the landscape, and it has that quiet sense of occasion without ever feeling overly formal.
For something a little more relaxed, The Jumble Room is another Grasmere favourite. Colourful, informal and full of character, it is a lovely contrast to the more refined dining rooms in the area and a great choice for an easy evening after a day exploring.
Ambleside is another brilliant option if food is part of the plan. Old Stamp House is known for its celebration of Cumbrian produce, while Lake Road Kitchen offers something more contemporary, with beautifully considered dishes and a wonderfully intimate atmosphere.
Closer to Windermere, The Samling is hard to beat for setting. The views across the lake are particularly special in autumn, and it is exactly the sort of place to settle in for a long lunch while the weather changes outside.
And not every meal needs to be a tasting menu or a special occasion. Sometimes autumn calls for a great country pub, and The Punch Bowl Inn at Crosthwaite does that exceptionally well — seasonal food, a warm welcome and a lovely position in the Lyth Valley.
One of the joys of visiting the Lake District at this time of year is that everything feels a little slower. There is time for a walk before lunch, a drink by the fire, or an evening built around somewhere you have been looking forward to trying.
For us, that is a big part of what makes autumn here so special.
