There is something truly special about Christmas in the Lake District. Frosty mornings, twinkling village lights, peaceful lakes and cosy evenings beside the fire make this one of our favourite times of year.
Whether you’re gathering the whole family for Christmas, escaping with friends or simply looking for somewhere beautiful to spend a few festive days, the Lakes offers the perfect setting to slow down and enjoy the season.
One of our favourite Christmas traditions is a Boxing Day walk around Tarn Hows, near Coniston. The beautiful circular route is perfect for stretching your legs after Christmas Day, with wonderful views across the surrounding fells. On a crisp winter morning, with frost on the trees and the water perfectly still, it is hard to imagine anywhere more peaceful.
Another lovely winter outing is a walk to Stock Ghyll Force in Ambleside, where the waterfalls are particularly impressive following a spell of winter rain. Afterwards, head to Force Café for a warming coffee and a slice of homemade cake before wandering through Ambleside’s independent shops.
For a little festive shopping, Rheged, near Penrith, is a wonderful place to discover thoughtful gifts, beautiful homeware and locally made treats. We also love exploring the independent shops in Grasmere, Hawkshead and Windermere, where you will find everything from handmade gifts to delicious local produce. Brockhole on Windermere is another lovely stop during the festive period, with its beautiful lakeside setting and seasonal atmosphere.
Of course, Christmas in the Lakes wouldn’t be complete without a cosy country pub. Think roaring fires, hearty seasonal food and a glass of something warming after a morning exploring. Whether it’s a long lunch or a relaxed afternoon tucked away from the winter weather, there are plenty of wonderful places to discover.
And sometimes, the very best part of a Christmas escape is simply staying in. Slow mornings, Christmas dinner with the family, board games around the table and evenings spent curled up beside the fire. It’s those little moments that make Christmas so memorable.
