How to spend a day in Grasmere

We often get asked for tips and recommendations on how to spend a day in the Lake District. This week, we’re focusing on Grasmere and how a crisp winters day is perfect for making the most of the stunning little town and its surroundings.

A drive to Grasmere is an experience in itself. Journeying along the A590 accompanied by picturesque Lakeland homes and ancient landscapes, Rydal water comes into view. With the imposing Loughrigg Fell towering above, wild swimmers brave the icy depths and hopeful fisherman keep cosy along the water’s edge, patient for an exciting catch.
In the distance, colourful walkers make their way along the ridges and footpaths of the frosted landscape, glinting in the early rising sun.

Arriving at the chocolate box village, slate roofs cover pretty little cottages and thin winding roads curve around unique homes and boutique shops.  The area itself is sank between two stunning mountain ranges. Fairfield pike reaches for the sky casting shadows across the valley, with dense winter fog masking the even larger Helvellyn, nestled behind.

Opposite, Helm Cragg and High Rise crowd the view and evoke a feeling of total isolation. Grasmere is a village that oozes mountain retreat and wilderness.

Once home to the iconic William Wordsworth, it is easy to see how such a magical place can trigger deep feelings of wonder and mystery. With nature always at your heels, and wildlife around every corner, an explore around Grasmere is one of the truest Lake District experiences imaginable.

We highly recommend a visit to Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread shop, in fact -it’s compulsory! Synonymous with Grasmere, no visit is complete without it. The delicious treat has been in production since 1854 and has remained unchanged and treasured by the community. Indulge in a little parcel heaven and then fill a bag full for the journey home. Don’t forget to stock up on gingerbread syrup and sauces for souvenirs.

Once the sun begins to set, rest your wearily legs before the journey home with a visit to the Badger Bar. Located opposite Rydal Water, below Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, this classic Cumbrian pub is a must visit. Cosy up by the fire and enjoy a great selection of local ales and spirits, or wind down with delicious Sunday dinner. What makes this place extra special, is the evening live-streams of the local badger set!

We would love to help you experience Grasmere and make the most of your Lake District getaway.
