The Lake District is a stunning location in which to admire and reflect on the wonder of natural beauty. The National Park presents an opportunity to contemplate how we, as individuals, can do our part to contribute, preserve and protect this iconic landscape.
We all know it is down to us to play our part in taking care of the planet and green spaces. A great way to do this is cutting down on car usage and choosing public transport where possible. Luckily for us, The Lake District has some great public transport available to make holidaying without a car an easy option. This is also handy for those visitors that don’t or would rather spend their holiday without the hassle of navigating Cumbria’s winding roads!
Take the Bus
The bus service around the Lakes is well used by locals and tourists alike. Stretching the length of the South Lakes, it’s easy to hop on at Kendal and quickly find yourself in Chapel Stile. Nip to Keswick for the day on the open-top double decker and enjoy the draw-dropping views on the way. Perhaps you fancy a tipple at one of the many incredible local pubs, simply jump on the bus and there’s no need to worry about the journey home.
This year, Stagecoach are continuing to offer all single fares for the price of just £2! This means a bus journey around the Lakes is not only good for the planet – but it will actually save you money.
A journey by bus is also a great way to site-see or entertain little ones. For just £2 you have access to hours of entertainment. Play eye-spy from the windows, watch for birds of prey floating high above and laugh at the Herdwicks, bouncing off of dry-stone walls and causing all kinds of cheeky chaos.
Train Travel
Due to the nature of the National Park, and all the mountains in the way, The Lake District is not well covered by trainlines. This, however, can be seen as a positive and with the help of the buses, needn’t deter car-free travellers from exploring the park.
Windermere train station serves as an excellent mode of transport delivering visitors straight into the beating heart of the Lakes. For many, Windermere and Bowness are the destinations of choice and therefor the station provides the ideal drop off point. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area, including ample hikes, boat hire, access to the Lake, places to eat and plenty of lovely accommodation.
For those travelling further, simply hop on the bus, or hail a taxi if you prefer and make your way to your home-from-home.
We love seeing the swathes of happy visitors arriving in Windermere and heading off on their dream holiday.
The town of Kendal is also home to a station, as well as Oxenholme – just on the outskirts of Kendal. You can easily catch a bus from these stations or walk into Kendal to pick up a hire car.
Boats & Steamers
It may not be the most obvious form of transport – but taking a boat up the Lake is a great way to view the Lake District from a completely new perspective. Relax and enjoy the breeze in your face and the mountains rolling by. Many passenger boats make multiple stops on their journey, so you can hop off for a bit of shopping or a bite to eat. It’s easy to take the bus back to your accommodation or catch a returning cruise.
These excursions are weather dependant so be sure to check the forecast before setting sail.
