A little history about Bowness

Nestled on the tranquil eastern shores of Windermere, England’s largest lake, lies the picturesque village of Bowness-on-Windermere, more commonly known as Bowness.

Although traces of human life being found dating back to the neolithic period in the area, it wasn’t until the medieval period that Bowness began to take shape as a recognizable settlement, primarily sustained by agriculture – forming the iconic landscape, laden with Herdwicks we recognise today.

The 19th century saw a new chapter unfold in Bowness’s history with the advent of tourism. Drawn by the idyllic landscapes immortalized in poetry and literature, travellers flocked to the shores of Windermere seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. The arrival of the railway in nearby Windermere in 1847 marked a pivotal moment, opening Bowness up to a wider audience and paving the way for its transformation into a thriving tourist destination.

The Victorian era witnessed the rise of Bowness’s popularity, as grand hotels and elegant guesthouses emerged along its quaint streets. Amidst the backdrop of dramatic hills and shimmering waters, visitors revelled in the serenity of the Lake District. The works of poets and writers, including the esteemed William Wordsworth, further immortalized the region, drawing admirers from far and wide.

As the 20th century dawned, Bowness embarked on a journey of preservation, recognizing the importance of safeguarding its cultural heritage. Old buildings, steeped in centuries of history, were restored, ensuring that the village retained its distinctive charm throughout the ages.

Thousands of visitors still travel to this stunning location each year, searching for the same peaceful respite as their ancestors.

Bowness stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Lake District and its endless perfection in providing solace for its guests.  Whether seeking adventure, fun, or the perfect fish and chips. Bowness is the ideal location for families, couples, and groups to enjoy their well-earned holiday.
