Why We Love Silverdale

Silverdale holds a place in the hearts of every individual who has the privilege of visiting the beautiful and unique village.  Well off the usual beaten tracks frequented by tourists, this hidden gem boasts beautiful beaches, ancient woodlands, and limestone pavements. With walks from the door, and an unparalleled sense of serenity, once you arrive, you might never want to leave.  We’ve put together a little list of our favourite and most unique things about Silverdale to persuade you to pay this special place a visit.

Silverdale Geology

The limestone paving’s that cover the length and breadth of Silverdale have become synonymous with the village and other local destinations. Historically, this unusual rock formation provided the locals with several natural springs and wells that became the villagers water supply. A piped water supply wasn’t provided for the village until 1938, and many larger wells are still evident today and can be seen on local walks. Woodwell as well as Lamberts Meadow still have distinct stone wells in which water would trickle out of the cliffs and be collected by the locals.

It is also due to this rock that the village remains so small. Built on a complex network of limestone, a sewage system has never been introduced. This lack of drainage limits the expansion of the village and makes it that much more unique.

Silverdale AONB

Silverdale was designated part of ‘The Arnside Silverdale AONB’ in 1972. Although it be small, it be mighty too. Plants grow in the Silverdale meadows and woodland that seem to struggle elsewhere, due to its unique location. With an extraordinary range of diverse habitats, and an abundance of wild flora and fauna, it truly is a naturists paradise.

Leighton Moss Nature Reserve

As if being within an AONB wasn’t enough, Silverdale is home to its very own RSPB nature reserve! Leighton Moss can provide a full day out for the entire family, with an activity centre for younger children to enjoy colouring and quizzes, a delicious café serving up hearty lunches, and even a gift shop. The surrounding area is host to several hides and board walks winding their way through the marshlands and unusual habitats. Get lost amongst the reeds and woodlands whilst watching out for the multitudes of rare wildlife.

A location like no other

On the outskirts of South Lakeland, stepping into Lancashire, Silverdale remains a well-kept secret. Situated on a peninsula of the Morecambe Bay coastline, the village is a destination point and therefore relinquished of any commuter or travel traffic. Even on the warmest of summer days, the village remains quiet, secluded, and safe.

When to visit Silverdale

Visit in spring and witness the landscape come to life with native flowers, the smell of wild garlic drifting through woodlands and the bats darting above as the sun sets.

Join us in summer and enjoy the warm sand between your toes and the unadulterated views sweeping across the sea.

In autumn, the village becomes awash with golds and browns as the woodlands begin to turn. Conkers cover the footpaths and the smell of woodsmoke creeps through the air.

And of course, nothing beats Christmas spent in this ‘chocolate box’ village. With a dusting of snow, time is lost in a winter wonderland.
