Why we love Kirkby Lonsdale

Kirkby Lonsdale is a little slice of heaven – an idyllic, historical market town nestled between the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales and situated alongside The River Lune. With many opportunities for a refreshing dip within walking distance of the town, the village is an ideal location for a summer holiday. Even in the winter months, the snow settles amongst the cobbled stones and the town comes alive with festive markets and events. There really is a reason to visit Kirkby Lonsdale in every season.

If you like shopping in local, independent stores then Kirkby Lonsdale is a dream come true. The streets and square are full of boutique retailers supplying everything from high end clothing, unique gifts, stunning floristry, and handmade chocolates. The town is also well stocked with cafes, restaurants, and pubs to ensure every taste is catered for.

We highly recommend a nip into the local butchers, famed for their incredible pork and damson pies!

Kirkby Lonsdale is packed with history; every ginnel and footpath leads to another iconic location. Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and with The Church of St Mary the Virgin dating back to 1093, it’s no wonder poets and artists flocked here to lay down their impressions of the beautiful landscape and revel in the town’s historical ambience. Turner and Ruskin both took a shine to the dainty streets, crooked houses, and chocolate-box scenery. ‘Ruskin’s View’ can be found in the far corner of the churchyard.  Rest here a while and enjoy the sound of running water, the chime of the church bells and the kingfishers darting in and out of the river.

We only have one property in Kirkby Lonsdale, but she’s a beauty. Weavers Cottage is a stunning two-bedroom property teaming with character and individuality. A little slice of luxury, you might never want to leave! Immaculately finished with toiletries from the local Bath House, an upstairs bathroom with stunning views across the town to the distant hills and sumptuous king and super-king -sized beds, this property makes for a perfect romantic getaway, or the ideal location to hunker down for a cosy family holiday.

If you are staying locally, or in one of our Lake District properties, Kirkby Lonsdale is well worth the drive out. Just 30 minutes’ drive from Windermere, it’s the perfect day trip. We recommend a visit the Milk Parlour for some warm waffle sticks and ice cream, as well as The Sun Inn in the square for cosy drinks by the fire or out in the sunshine. And don’t forget a walk over Devils Bridge – built by the devil himself!
